Snow Cap Drive-In

October 6th, 2009

380 W. Cascade Ave., Sisters, OR

541-549-6151

This little old-fashioned burger and ice cream joint was recommended to me by the owner of the finest French restaurant in Sisters. Taking that advice, I took my daughters to the Snow Cap and was pleasantly surprised. Offering the usual grill menu, along with homemade ice cream in all flavors including locally inspired ones such as Cascade Blackberry, Marionberry, Red Rasberry, Licorice, Maple Nut, and plenty of creative ones such as Cotton Candy, Birthday Cake, and Chai Tea. While on vacation, it’s okay to splurge!

Sisters Coffee Company

Located in downtown Sisters, you can grab a cup of fresh roasted coffee to go, along with a small assortment of pastries, or take a seat and enjoy the company of locals and visitors alike. Don’t miss the pot of oatmeal with all the toppings near the entry way ($3), like I did-no sign, or when it becomes soup at lunchtime during the winter months. They also sell  their coffee and souvenirs galore.

Big Meadow Restaurant

Black Butte Ranch, OR 97759

You can either pay a hefty price to enjoy the incredible view and pretty good food at the Lodge at Black Butte Ranch, or drive a little further in and enjoy a really nice view and pretty good food for much better prices at the Clubhouse-or Big Meadow Restaurant in Black Butte Ranch.  After a day of hiking or driving round the mountain, I chose to sit in the bar (patio seating available), and chow down their pastrami sandwich special, loaded with cheese, mushrooms and horseradish sauce the first time I went, accompanied by the Lodge’s house salad-a delicious pile of greens, with cranberries, nuts and a fruity vinaigrette dressing. The second time I thoroughly enjoyed their hamburger with onion rings and a salad. That covered the basic food groups, right?!

Taco Amigo

October 2nd, 2009

@Space Age Gas Station on Cascade, Sisters, OR

Open 9:30am to 8pm daily, Closed Sundays

With nothing over $5, this is the most authentic Mexican food anywhere in Oregon that I have ever had! The shredded beef soft taco was filled with delicious, moist and tender beef and topped with a little pico de gallo. Sometimes you have to be willing to sample in the unexpected places. I noticed this little shop, housed on the end of the service station, while shopping at the farmer’s stand behind it. The cleanliness and order was evident from the window facing out back. I wasn’t afraid to try it, and was pleasantly surprised. Can’t wait to go back and try their burritos, as that is always my deal maker or breaker.
